Let’s Look at child Seat Law

Using a child car seat or booster seat

Children must normally use a child car seat until they’re 12 years old or 135 cm tall, whichever comes first. Only EU-approved child car seats can be used in the UK. These have a label showing a capital ‘E’ in a circle. You can choose a child car seat based on your child’s height or weight.

Now that we have laid down the law

Let’s look at i-size and ISOFIX. ISOFIX is an international system, which provides the safest, simplest and quickest method of correct installation of a child car seat. Instead of using the regular car seat belt, the ISOFIX system secures the baby seat to the car chassis via two specially incorporated anchor points behind the car seat.

ISOFIX also helps reduce the forward and side ward movement of the seat and limits rotation through a special support leg. For the past 10 years, EU legislation mandated that all new cars must have ISOFIX anchor points as standard. Hence, currently approximately 60% of all cars on the road have ISOFIX anchor points.

i-Size seats were created to offer improved protection for younger children. Unlike normal seats i-Size seats are based on a child's height (not weight) and allows them to travel in the recommended rear-facing position for longer up to at least 15 months old for group 0+ car seats.

The two standards will run side by side for the foreseeable future. The i-Size standard is exclusive to ISOFIX child seats. The “ECER44” standard remains a norm for seat belt-fixed seats and ISOFIX seats for a while.

Child car seats that comply with the new i-Size regulation provide up to twice as much protection as conventional child car seats. For example, i-Size seats provide better head and neck protection, thanks to the longer rearward facing of 15 months. i-Size also provides better side-impact protection because, for the first time ever in a child car seat regulation, it includes a set of minimum performance criteria for this type of collision.

Car seats are grouped into specific weights or age groups allowing you identify quickly which group you need giving you more time to research the differences between them all.
